S-BAHN TRAINS

Increasingly, double-deck, low-floor train sets are being used on the S-Bahn’s backbone network. Sliding steps make access easier through all the doors.

From December 2009, these trains have been in use on the following routes:

S7 Winterthur – Zürich HB – Meilen – Rapperswil (all services low-floor)
S8 (Weinfelden) – Winterthur – Zürich HB – Pfäffikon SZ
(all services low-floor)
S14 Zürich HB – Uster – Wetzikon – Hinwil (all services low-floor)
S15 Rapperswil – Zürich HB – Affoltern am Albis (all services low-floor)
S16 Thayngen – Schaffhausen – Winterthur – Zürich Flughafen – Zürich HB – Herrliberg-Feldmeilen (– Meilen) (individual services low-floor)

Sometimes, exceptional operational constraints make it necessary to run high-floor trains on these routes instead of the intended low-floor ones.

The various stations served by S-Bahn trains and trams differ considerably when it come to ease-of-use for passengers in wheelchairs (different platform heights and the presence of ramps or stairs). Since January 2008, the ZVV, in cooperation with the transport companies, has been providing passengers with more detailed information about the accessibility of stations and platforms as well as the arrangements for boarding trains – individually for each of the S-Bahn routes with low-floor services.

Stations at which assistance can be booked in advance

More and more low-floor trains are being used by the operators (SBB and THURBO) in Zurich’s S-Bahn network. At thirty others stations within the ZVV territory, organisational arrangements have been made for staff to be available to assist passengers in wheelchairs. These stations are equipped with “Mobilifts”, thanks to which passengers in wheelchairs can use the high-floor trains operating the following S-Bahn routes: S2, S3, S5, S6, S7, S8, S9, S12, S14, S16 (Saturdays and Sundays); they can also be used for boarding and alighting from long-distance trains.
