ROLL-OUT OF NEW AUTOMATIC TICKET MACHINES

StartScreen_420
90 percent of all tickets sold can now be selected with a single touch.

Since 30 June 2009 a continuous stream of new automatic ticket machines with navigation specially adapted for ZVV customers have been rolled out across the Zurich S-Bahn train network. This means that you can now get the ZVV ticket you need more quickly when travelling by S-Bahn, and choose from a wider range. New ticket machines are also being tested at four VBZ stops in the city of Zurich. The plan is to change all the automatic ticket machines in the cities of Zurich and Winterthur, as well along the Forchbahn and SZU lines and in various other networks over the course of 2010.

Updated machines at SBB S-Bahn stations

The ZVV has commissioned the SBB to adapt about 200 new SBB ticket machines within the regional network especially to suit the requirements of ZVV customers. The operation of all ZVV ticket machines, including the new generation ones, will therefore remain consistent throughout the region.
Thanks to the new features, you will be able to get to your ticket more quickly and choose from a wider range of options. You will see most commonly used ZVV tickets straight away on the start screen. As before you can pay at the machines with coins and notes, but now you can also pay by debit or credit card.

This added level of convenience is available at the new machines with touch-sensitive screens. You can recognize machines on which the ZVV system is installed by the blue frame round the screen and the ZVV logo. The other SBB machines offering the standard national range of SBB tickets have a red frame round the screen.

New machines at four locations in city of Zurich

Since July 2009 new ZVV automatic ticket machines have been in place at Albisriederplatz, Limmatplatz, Bellevue and Paradeplatz. These were developed by another supplier and are planned for the VBZ, Stadtbus Winterthur, and the SZU and Forchbahn lines. The stops were chosen for their proximity to VBZ-Ticketerias, so if customers have any questions VBZ staff will be on hand to help. The four test machines should provide valuable information in preparation for the pilot operation. The pilot operation and subsequent roll-out of all the approximately 1100 ticket machines and 500 driver sales machines are planned for 2010. The new ZVV machines will be used in the city of Zurich, in Winterthur, on the SZU and Forchbahn lines and on various other transport networks within the ZVV area.

The test machines can do a lot…

At the new ZVV ticket machines you can buy ZVV single tickets, day passes and zone upgrades as before. But now you can also buy the following products:

  • Multiple tickets (multiple-journey tickets, multiple day passes etc.)
  • Extensions to personal monthly travelcards
  • Transferable monthly travelcards
  • Transferable annual travelcards
  • ZürichCARDs

The machine also offers sensible alternative and additional options to suit the context and time of day, such as the 9 o’clock day pass for people purchasing tickets after 9 in the morning. Information and graphics help you choose the best ticket. And by using the basket function, which you may know from Amazon for example, you can buy several tickets at once. If you don’t have enough coins to hand, the new machines also accept all the usual debit and credit cards. Last but not least, the new ZVV machine knows four languages, making it easier for foreign guests to buy the right tickets.

…but not everything

Certain functions are not yet available on the test machines. Over the next year you will be able to buy an even greater range of products at the new ZVV ticket machines. The most important functions to look forward to are:

  • Free choice of alternative departure locations
  • Z-Pass travelcards and national tariff tickets (e.g. Zurich-Bern)
  • Combo tickets (e.g. public transport ticket combined with entry to a zoo)
  • Other provider’s products (e.g. prepaid telephone talk-time)

The speech-based remote control for visually-impaired customers is also deactivated at the moment. The supplier is currently completing the system in accordance with ZVV’s and VBZ’s requirements.
