Limmattal line

Between Zurich Altstetten and Killwangen-Spreitenbach the Limmattal line will connect the various residential, business and central districts.

The Limmattal is one of the fastest growing regions in the Zurich area. Strong growth in population and jobs is expected over the next few years. An increase in residential property and workplaces will result in more traffic. This is to be handled to a large extent by public transport according the traffic objectives of the canton. The Limmattal line will run alongside the S-Bahn trains and increase the quality of public transport as a valued connecting service throughout the Limmattal.

Attractive connection to the S-Bahn network

The Limmattal line makes it possible to travel quickly in densely populated areas and thus enables good connections to the S-Bahn at Zurich Altstetten, Schlieren, Dietikon and Killwangen-Spreitenbach train stations. The capacity of the main axis will be increased and include the municipalities of Schlieren, Urdorf, Dietikon and Spreitenbach. 27 stops are planned along the 13.4 km stretch.

Financing

The project is being financed by the Cantons of Aargau and Zurich. They are sharing the total costs of 755 million Swiss francs based on the territorial principle. The federal government is covering around one third of the project's total costs as part of its agglomeration policy.

Timing

In November 2015 Zurich voters approved the cantonal contribution to the Limmattal line with 64.5 per cent voting "yes". The Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau had already approved the Aargau contribution in May 2015. Construction work on the first stage between Zurich Altstetten and Schlieren began in summer 2017. Trams have been running on this route since September 2019. By 2022, the Limmattal line is scheduled to run all the way to Killwangen-Spreitenbach in the Canton of Aargau.
